This is the second time I’ve been to Raw Bar. The first time we tried it during Big Taste Calgary, and I enjoyed it a lot. However, I found the dishes to be a bit on the small side, so I wasn’t sure if I would return to try the regular menu (and regular prices).
On this visit I had a Groupon, which helped to make the dining experience more reasonable. And as we perused the menu, we noticed that it wasn’t really as pricey as we though it was. (We also ordered a lot of appetizers to share as opposed to two mains, but I’m finding more and more that I enjoy doing this as it lets you try a lot of a restaurant’s signature dishes without spending a ton.)
Here’s what we enjoyed:
1) Halibut Fish Taco. This dish had tons of flavour with lime yogurt, pickled red cabbage and golden pineapple salsa. This was one of my favourites of the night, an amazing taste explosion in my mouth!
2) BC Spot Prawn and Papaya Salad Roll. This dish was fresh, fresh, fresh. With cucumber, carrot, daikon and yummy spot prawns, it had clean flavour and a beautiful presentation.
3) Pad Thai. This was a good dish with beef, prawns, fresh basil and candied cashews. Not your traditional pad thai, but not bad, either. (I’ve had really amazing pad thai in Thailand, so it’s hard for others to compare.)
4) Dungeness Crab and Mango Roll. These were creamy and delicious with a bit of kick with the spicy aioli.
We opted out of dessert as we were stuffed after having four dishes. I did try a really decadent chocolate dessert last time around (the Valrhona Chocolate Mousse), which I would definitely recommend. All in all, we really liked everything we ate. I would definitely return on a regular day, sans coupon.
WHAT TO GET: Halibut fish taco and prawn and papaya roll.
