I don’t know what happened that week, but we ended up having burgers at Five Guys just a few days after we had tried the Whole Truck Burger at Alley Burger. I think we were out by Deerfoot Meadows and decided to grab a quick bite before going to IKEA.
This was my second time to Five Guys. The first time I had gone to the one in Kalispell, Montana, after my brother ranted and raved about how awesome they were. I remember thinking the burger was just okay, but really enjoying the fries. This time around, I felt pretty much the same.
There was a lot of hype surrounding the opening of Five Guys to Calgary, and I guess, a lot of hype in general. This is supposed to be one of Obama’s favourite restaurants, and inside the restaurant there are awards and accolades covering every wall. There are also huge boxes of free peanuts, if you like that sort of thing.
Things to know when ordering at Five Guys:
1) The regular hamburger is a double. Get the “little” hamburger if you want a decent-sized single burger.
2) The fries are humongous. They pretty much give you a bag of them, so just go with the regular size.
3) You can add a bunch of toppings for free, including grilled onions and grilled mushrooms. I thought this was a really nice touch.
Is this burger the best burger I’ve ever had? No. Is it better than your average fast food burger? Yes. The addition of your own toppings really makes it a tasty burger, but it’s nothing that will blow you off your feet. I do enjoy the fries, though. They are hand cut and fresh, a bit on the soggy side but very delicious!
