  1. [Richmond] Dinesty Chinese Restaurant

    August 1, 2011 by admin

We loved this restaurant so much, we went twice during our trip! Although the soup dumplings a close second to Shanghai River’s, we liked every thing we tried here and would rate it best overall Chinese restaurant in Vancouver. The decor is also very modern and clean, and the service fast and efficient.

Here’s what we enjoyed (by row, left to right):

    1) Shanghai noodles. These were greasy, but so good. Chewy and tasty with the standard cabbage and pork, we had to try them and were glad we did!

    2) Chicken and corn soup. Because we were travelling with our daughter, we had to choose some baby-friendly dishes that we normally wouldn’t order. This is a standard Chinese soup, but it was done so well. It was sweet, hearty and satisfying – and a perfect complement to some of the heavier dishes we were eating.

    3) Soup dumplings (steamed pork dumplings on menu). I had done my homework on Urbanspoon, and there were many places that people said had the best soup dumplings. I also had a friend who had recommended this restaurant, even though she couldn’t remember the name of it at the time. These were very, very good – a close second to Shanghai River’s. The skin was even a bit thinner, but I think we enjoyed the broth and texture of Shanghai River’s dumpling better. Give both a try – and let me know what you think!

    4) Pork and shrimp siu mai. This is a steamed dumpling with pork and shrimp. They were done very well, almost like mini soup dumplings in themselves, but with less soup and a tasty shrimp on top.

    5) Pan fried pork dumplings. The word “dumpling” is used very loosely here, these are more like pan fried buns with pork inside. Heavy, but 0h-so-delicious. I would eat a bunch of these if they weren’t so obviously unhealthy.

Note: The menu has a picture for each item, so you know exactly what you’ll be getting. Great if you’re not familiar with the names or if the descriptions are somewhat confusing.

On our second visit, we ordered the soup dumplings and chicken and corn soup again, and tried these two additional dishes:

    6) Stir fried seafood and vegetables and spicy green beans with pork. The seafood was fresh and fried lightly. We were craving vegetables by the end of our trip, so we also tried the spicy green beans with pork. These were so flavourful compared to the somewhat subdued seafood dish. But both were very good – I don’t think we could complain about any of the dishes we tried at Dinesty.

During both visits we used the restaurant’s high chair, which was very convenient. The second time we came, the waitress brought our daughter a cute Hello Kitty plate and cutlery – something they didn’t have to do, but was a nice, friendly touch.

WHAT TO GET: I would definitely get the soup dumplings, corn soup if you want something lighter to cut the grease, the pan fried pork dumplings, and if you’re having rice, the spicy green beans are delish.

  2. [Richmond] Beard Papa’s at Aberdeen Centre

    by admin

I’ve had Beard Papa’s cream puffs several times, but the first time was the best. They are usually very fresh and flaky with an amazing vanilla cream inside. I’ve tried the chocolate as well, but vanilla is definitely the way to go.

This time around, the cream puff exterior wasn’t as fresh as I’ve had in the past. It was a bit hard, which was quite a disappointment. However, the vanilla cream was just as delicious as I remembered it – rich, sweet and decadent.

There was a new menu item I noticed called Fondant Au Chocolat. Basically this was a miniature lava cake with sugar sprinkled on top. We decided to try one of these as well. It was very rich and heavy, so the small size was actually perfect. Any more and it would have been too much.

WHAT TO GET: I would still recommend the Original Vanilla flavour – it’s the best. After you try that, you can experiment with the other flavours.

  3. [Richmond] Shanghai River

    by admin

We went to Shanghai River years ago and really enjoyed the soup dumplings, or xiao long bao, here. When we were planning this trip, there were several recommendations for this place, so we decided to return for dim sum.

The decor is very bright and clean, a bit more modern than your standard Chinese restaurant. We arrived around 11:00 on a weekday and watched the restaurant fill up quickly. You can see why this place is popular – they have a lot of dishes not found at other Asian restaurants, and they also make many of their pastries fresh onsite (you can watch them as they are making various dumplings and buns).

Here’s what we enjoyed (by row, left to right):

    1) Oily stick and sesame cracker. The oily stick was freshly fried, hot and chewy. The sesame cracker was a bit bland, but also tasty.

    2) Duck and fish maw soup. We expected something entirely different from what arrived. A standard fish maw soup is white with chunks of fish stomach in it. This was more like a “hot and sour soup, without the hot,” is how my husband described it. Not bad, just not what we were expecting.

    3) Soup dumplings! It’s nearly impossible to find a good soup dumpling in Calgary. The skin is usually too thick, and the soup has either leaked or evaporated by the time you get it. These were perfect – juicy, flavourful and to die for. They were so juicy I actually squirted myself in the eye biting into the last one! ;)

    4) Turnip pastry. Again, a little bland, but so pretty to look at. I also enjoyed the flaky pastry.

    5) Shrimp dumplings. I was expecting these to be steamed. Instead, they were large pan fried dumplings with shrimp stuffing inside. A bit greasy, but very yummy.

    6) Pan-fried shanghai wontons. This was a dish we tried last time and really liked. Similar to regular pork dumplings, but very tiny and tasty. The server told us these would take 20 minutes – perhaps they were still making them? When the plate arrived, the wontons were a little harder that we liked. They probably could have used a bit more time in the water, but they were still good.

If you are looking for traditional dim sum, you won’t find it here. But if you want the BEST SOUP DUMPLINGS in Vancouver and a variety of Shanghai dishes, I would recommend Shanghai River.

WHAT TO GET: I would definitely order the soup dumplings and shanghai wontons. But the majority of their dishes are very good.
